As the main representative of Romantic piano miniaturism, Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903) wrote more than 1000 compositions for the piano alone. A look at his chamber music works is also particularly rewarding: his »8 Pieces Op. 79«, for example, can be played with cello, violin or viola and piano. Born in the Erzgebirge, Kirchner worked in Switzerland for many years. His entire life was marked by financial hardship; his friend Johannes Brahms supported him financially, and in 1884 a fundraising campaign was initiated for him, in which well-known names such as Edvard Grieg, Hans von Bülow and Carl Reinecke also participated.
